After World War II, there was an increase in sexually transmitted infection (STI) cases due to the direct and indirect contribution to the dissemination of pathogens far beyond the territory at the epicenter of the conflict. On February 13, 1949, Dr. Jaime O. Quiason, the first Medical Director of the Manila Rapid Treatment Center (MRTC) and Field Supervisor of the United States Health Services, together with Dr. Jose Amador Guevarra, a venereal disease expert of the World Health Organization (WHO), recognized that there was a need to enhance the detection and management of STIs in the Philippines. These two physicians conceptualized and formed the Philippine Society of Venereologists (PSV). Several days later, the historic launching of the society was conducted on February 19, 1949. PSV eventually became a member-specialty society of the Philippine Medical Association (PMA).

Since then, PSV has conducted a series of seminars in MRTC and in other areas of Manila. The initial members were physicians and medical technologists. Eventually, they grew enticing more physicians who were interested in this field of medicine. Since then, as the
number grew and activities continued, the society has engaged public and private organizations to fulfill their goals of reducing the spread of STIs for the betterment of Filipinos. It had also established a link with the International Union of Sexually Transmitted Infections (IUSTI).

To date, PSV is recognized by and is an affiliated society of the Philippine Medical Association (PMA) and the Philippine Academy of Family Physicians (PAFP). PSV has opened doors of opportunity for other physicians to become venereologists as their subspecialty. Currently, its
members are specialists who have finished their primary specialties, such as Family Medicine, Dermatology, Pediatrics, Obstetrics and Gynecology, Urology, Internal Medicine,Occupational Medicine, and others. In 2024, PSV members grew to more than 300, united to
the vision that every Filipino is knowledgeable, conscious, discerning, and empowered againstsexually transmitted infections.

The Society believes that in order to halt the spread of STIs, it needs a unified and concerted effort from all physicians and other health care professionals in its fight against the disease. InPSV, every person with STI is important not only as a patient but as a significant individual in a family that deserves a better and more comprehensive management.
